在風景如畫的桂林，兩戶人家隔河相望，一家是武當嫡傳的鮑笙鳳（于承惠 飾），鮑家一連八個，皆為女兒，致武當劍法有失傳之虞，鮑笙鳳整日愁眉不展，更對對岸的少林一家怒目相視。十年前，少林弟子天龍（于海 飾）、二龍從強盜禿鷹（計春華 飾）一伙手中救下八名孤兒，師兄弟將八個干兒子辛苦養大，自己的終身大事卻一拖再拖，兩人屬意鮑家大鳳、二鳳（丁嵐 飾）多時，無奈鮑笙鳳視少林為敵，定下十頭牛換一門親的苛刻條件。三龍（李連杰 飾）與七個兄弟為成全干爹和二叔，不舍不棄使出連番妙計，同時與三鳳（黃秋燕 飾）在長期的對峙中互生了情意……另一方面，不甘十年前受創的禿鷹一伙派出奸細，試圖進一步挑撥龍、鳳兩家關系，三龍為父為己的求婚之路，頓時荊棘密布……
