故事發(fā)生在1946年。內(nèi)戰(zhàn)過后，西班牙中心地帶的某個(gè)地方只剩下絕望，貧窮和流犯。有一個(gè)男孩不斷逃亡，并在溝渠中找到了藏身之處。搜查隊(duì)離開后，他面對的是一個(gè)充滿危險(xiǎn)和干旱的平原。萬幸的是，他在穿越平原的路上遇到了一個(gè)牧羊人，兩人最終選擇同行。一路上，他們必須應(yīng)對饑餓和缺水，并逃避由工頭派來尋找男孩的人。牧羊人成為男孩的導(dǎo)師：他解釋了他的職業(yè)和他對生活的理解。隨著時(shí)間的流逝，牧羊人也知曉了男孩想要逃避的究竟是怎樣的恐懼。
